How Italians Dress

What immediately identifies you as a tourist

Avoid: Athletic wear or gym clothes in the city

Avoid: Logo or slogan t-shirts

Avoid: Shorts

Avoid: Baseball caps in restaurants or churches

Avoid: Backpacks at dinner — a crossbody reads local and is safer

Avoid: Visible money belts — slim card holder, front pocket

What works perfectly

Do: Dark, well-fitted jeans or trousers

Do: Neutral colours: black, navy, camel, olive, grey

Do: Simple tops, neat knitwear, a good scarf

Do: A proper coat: wool or smart quilted, not a parka

Do: A small step up for dinner

What to Pack

Shoes

The Most Important Decision

Waterproof leather boots or sturdy leather-look walkers, already broken in. One pair does every day and every dinner. Wet cobbles are slippery.

Clothing

One good coat · 2–3 sweaters or long-sleeve tops · dark jeans or smart trousers · a few simple day tops · one nicer top for the Alba lunch. Pack light: trains and cobbles punish heavy bags.

Rain Gear

Compact umbrella or packable rain jacket. Not a poncho.

Day Bag

Crossbody, not a backpack. Harder to pickpocket.

Scarf

Light wool or cashmere, neutral. Warmth, church shoulder cover, and it reads local.

Extras & Tech

Type L adapter (three prongs in a line). Portable charger — phones run maps all day.

Vatican Dress Code

Enforced at St Peter's and every church. November layers handle it.

Shoulders covered — coat or scarf

Knees covered — trousers or jeans

No hats inside

Leave at Home

Avoid: Formal dinner clothes

Avoid: Shorts

Avoid: Athletic wear for the city

Avoid: More than one large checked bag
